A light neutral back is the traditional finish for an heirloom quilt, and it is the easiest colour to quilt on because the thread and the stitch line stay visible while you work. Off white also lets a heavily pieced or scrappy front stay the centre of attention. Where a pure white would shadow the seam allowances through, the creams and naturals here are more forgiving.
