Grunge is a mottled, slightly distressed texture printed over a single colour. It is the most popular blender in quilting for a reason: it functions as a solid but forgives everything a solid does not.

On a wide back that matters more than on a pieced top. Any unevenness in the quilting, any variation in thread tension across a large area, is absorbed by the texture instead of being framed by flat colour.
